This well-proportioned 1930s house was owned by the same family since it was built. When we viewed the property we felt like we walked into the 1930s. Stained glass windows, original wooden floor, beautiful staircase - the house had plenty of great features. The interior of this property hadn’t been touched for over 85 years and whilst we enjoyed experiencing what it was like to live in the 1930s, we had a lot of work to do to make the house suitable for modern living.
We opened up the kitchen-dining area by removing two load-bearing walls and incorporated the old lean-to area and outside toilet. By adding a pitched roof and Velux windows to the extension we flooded the room with natural light making it feel brighter, lighter, and more spacious. The property had old metal framed single glazed windows and the only source of heating was a fireplace. We arranged a new gas connection to the property, replaced the old single glazed metal windows, rewired the electrics, installed a new gas central heating system, added a cloakroom under the staircase, and created a large family bathroom by knocking through the wall between the WC and the old bathroom. During the renovation, one of our main objectives was to find the right balance between keeping some of the original features whilst putting a modern twist on it.
